Chao Praya Catfish

Chao Praya Catfish

Posted on 2009-05-24

Brian having had an excellent time of it fishing with us in March 2009 couldn't wait to return again to fish with us in May 2009! And it was an absolute pleasure to see him again. Brian is one of the most chilled out anglers and a pleasure to have the opportunity to take fishing.

The first stop for Brian on his return adventure to Thailand was Palm Tree Lagoon, as Brian had seen a huge Arapaima surface at the venue on repeated occassions during his previous trip, and really wanted a monster Arapaima. Palm Tree Lagoon although small and rustic is a lovely spot to fish, the owner Khun "Hong" and his team are friendly and helpful. It's a family run venue so therefore you tend to feel 'right at home' when you are there, it's a truly authentic Thai Fishing experience.

Over the few days Brian fished at Palm Tree he caught an assortment of fish, the highlight being two Chao Praya Catfish in excess of 40kgs and 50kgs a piece on the first day! Our only regret was that scales where temporarily out of order at the time otherwise we could have been looking at world records, but with these two fish making the tally of Chao Praya's that we have taken over 40kg to 3 in 6 months, it's clearly only a matter of time before we can witness a record capture here. As well as the very large Chao Phraya Catfish, there where big Pacu, Rohu, Thai Redtail Catfish, Amazon Redtail Catfish, Arapaima... and a first for Palm Tree Lagoon, since it was the first one caught since the lake had been stocked with them... a stingray approximately 1 metre in diameter.

The stingray was a bit of a tricky customer and took a long time to get to the bank. They like to dive and hug the silty bottom, so it does take a lot of doing to extricate them from the depths. Mind you, when the fish was finally brought up it made for a very happy Brian... which is what counts in the end. Unfortunately the big Arapaima didn't put in an appearance on this occassions, but we hope we see you again soon Brian. December?!
